Skin Care tweaks we all need to make during Winter

The colder weather has a negative effective on our skin and just as we change our wardrobe for the change of season we also need to change the types of products we are putting on our skin. A few simple tweaks to our skin care routine as the temperature drops will leave your skin looking and feeling great all winter long.

Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise

Moisturising is one of most important things you can do for your skin whatever your age, especially in the winter when the central heating can leave it feeling heavily dehydrated. During the winter treat your skin to a generous slather of moisturiser to lock in essential oils and ingredients needed for soft and supple skin. My favourite for this time of year is the ‘Liz Earle Superskin Moisturiser with natural neroli’ which is rich in omega 3, GLA and antioxidants, designed to nourish the skin and lock in moisture.

Don’t forget to wear an SPF

Do you really need to wear a sunscreen in the winter? Well the answer is yes! UVB rays are weaker in the winter so you won’t get sunburn as easily but the UVA rays that cause wrinkles, premature ageing and damage are just as strong all year round. A simple way to make sure you are adding an SPF to your daily routine is to use a moisturiser with a sun protection factor 50 included in it to protect your skin year round.

Introduce an Oil

Going from the cold outdoors into central heated buildings and vice versa can take its toll on your complexion and you are more likely to experience dry, parched and flakier skin. Introducing an oil into your beauty routine will hydrate your skin and help to improve moisture retention. Choose an oil rich in Vitamin C such as ‘The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone £5.80’ at this time of year to brighten a dull complexion and help prevent inflammation.

Choose a body lotion to tackle winter skin

Moisturising your body can feel like a chore but during winter months it is essential. Using an effective body lotion now will not only look after your skin this season, it will prep it for the spring and summer months to come. Choose a luxurious body cream such as ‘L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Body Cream £34’ that you will look forward to using after every shower.

De-stress your tresses

The cold weather and indoor heat can cause havoc to your hair, leading to split ends and breakage. During winter use a leave in conditioner to keep hair hydrated and lock in essential moisture. Commit to a weekly treatment such as a hair mask. Hair masks can revive lacklustre hair in one application, perfect for the party season! I love the ‘The Body Shop Banana Truly Nourishing Hair Mask £12’, this weekly treatment won’t break the bank and will instantly give you glossy, beautiful hair.
